Hello, everyone, and thank you, Reverend Sharpton, for inviting me today. It’s a real pleasure to join NAN in celebrating the life and legacy of “the moral leader of our nation,” which is what A. Phillip Randolph called Dr. King on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, moments before inviting him to deliver the “I Have a Dream” speech

Like many people, I use this holiday to reacquaint myself with that remarkable speech and was interested see to that Dr. King uses a financial metaphor in a key passage.

“When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence,” he said, “they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir.”

 “It is obvious today that America has defaulted on this promissory note insofar as her citizens of color are concerned,” he continued, “[They’ve been given] a bad check, a check which has come back marked insufficient funds. But we refuse to believe the bank of justice is bankrupt!”

It is compelling rhetoric, but I also think Dr. King knew it was a more than a metaphor. He knew that economic injustice was bound up in the larger injustice he fought against. From Reconstruction, to Jim Crow, to the present day, our economy has never worked fairly for Black Americans – or, really, for any American of color.

Well, since taking office last January, our administration has tried to change that; to ensure that neither the figurative bank of justice – nor any literal economic institution – fails to work for people of color.

It has been a year of action, especially at the Treasury Department. We’ve completed Treasury’s first equity review, looking across the Department and asking: Where are our operations not as inclusive as they should be?

We’ve brought on the most diverse leadership team in Treasury’s history and hired the Department’s first ever counselor on racial equity.

And then there’s Treasury’s pandemic response. We knew that the communities hurt most by COVID were often communities of color, and so as we began implementing relief bills like the American Rescue Plan, we did so with equity in mind. 

Reverend Sharpton, we were very glad to host you at our Freedman’s Bank Forum last month.

We announced there that Treasury was injecting $9 billion dollars into Community Development Financial Institutions and Minority Depository Institutions. These CDFIs and MDIs serve people and places that the financial sector historically hasn’t served well.

We also included CEOs from some of the country’s largest financial institutions in the meeting. Beyond just injecting capital in CDFIs and MDIs, we wanted to find ways for these larger institutions to partner with them so they could scale up even further.

Of course, no one program and no one administration can make good on the hopes and aspirations that Dr. King had for our country. There is still much more work Treasury needs to do to narrow the racial wealth divide. 

We also know that progress requires a constellation of actors across generations, in and out of government – and that is why NAN’s work remains so essential. Thank you, all, for your partnership and your leadership. I look forward to continuing the effort for racial and economic equality in 2022.

Government of Canada invests $35 million to expand settlement services for newcomers in small towns and rural communities

 January 17, 2022—Ottawa—Newcomers to Canada play a crucial role in the future of our country and contribute in important ways to our society and economic recovery from the pandemic. To ensure newcomers settling in small towns and rural communities have access to essential services during their first year in Canada, the Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced an investment of more than $35 million to expand resettlement capacity and settlement services across Canada.

These services have never been more critical for newcomers, as the ongoing pandemic has added to the already challenging process of building a new life in a new country. Following the Resettlement Assistance Program and Case Management Services call for proposals, 23 projects were selected to provide greater services to help refugees and vulnerable newcomers settle and adapt to life in Canada.

This investment includes $21 million to add 9 new Resettlement Assistance Program service providers in British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba and New Brunswick. These organizations will help reduce pressure on the 32 existing Resettlement Assistance Program service providers across Canada and provide refugees with an opportunity to settle in small- and medium-sized towns and rural communities where affordable housing is more readily available. Settlement services help refugees and vulnerable newcomers learn the language, gain employment and contribute to their communities, so they can reach their full potential quicker as Canada moves towards economic recovery.

In addition, $14 million will be invested in case management services for 14 existing service providers, so that they can assist more vulnerable newcomers with support and referrals to successfully settle into their new communities. This includes a pilot project aimed at bolstering Francophone case management in the Prairies.

Canada’s success as an international leader in settlement and integration is a result of the extraordinary efforts of our service provider organizations across Canada. They work tirelessly to deliver support services to newcomers in communities, which are critical during the global COVID-19 pandemic and as we welcome more newcomers than ever before. Newcomers often face many changes as they adjust to life in Canada: finding a home, starting a new job and learning a new language. With these new investments, newcomers like the Afghan refugees arriving in Canada will be even more supported as they adjust to life in their new home.

Quick facts

The Resettlement Assistance Program is a funding program operating in all provinces outside Quebec that supports government-assisted refugees and other eligible clients upon arrival in Canada. The program provides newcomers with direct financial support and funds service provider organizations to deliver immediate and essential services. 

Financial support includes a one-time start up allowance and monthly income support typically provided for up to 1 year or until clients can support themselves, whichever comes first. Resettlement Assistance Program service provider organizations deliver immediate and essential services to clients generally within 4 to 6 weeks of arrival in Canada. 

These new investments will expand the Resettlement Assistance Program service provider organization footprint to 41 communities across Canada, which will enhance the support our refugees need for their successful resettlement journey. 

Case management refers to a comprehensive approach to supporting the settlement of government-assisted refugees and other high-needs and vulnerable newcomers facing multiple and complex barriers to integration during their first 12 to 18 months in Canada. 

Case management services involve a comprehensive needs and assets assessment, resulting in a settlement plan that includes referrals, regular monitoring of progress and check-ins at set intervals, as well as personalized and intensive supports based on client needs.

Lexus Design Award 2019 Now Open for Entries―Aspiring Creators to Design a Better Tomorrow

August 9, 2018―Lexus International today announced a call for entries for the distinguished Lexus Design Award 2019. Since its launch in 2013, the worldwide design competition has always served as a platform for emerging designers and creators whose works can lead to a better future for all. The annual event attracts thousands of upcoming creative talent from around the world, who aspire to win the coveted award for innovative design excellence.


Making the world a better place through design has always been the program's purpose and now, in its seventh year, the 2019 award makes that objective clearer than ever under the directive of "Design for a Better Tomorrow".

The next-generation of designers will need to consider how their creative ideas incorporate three fundamental principles from the Lexus brand: "Anticipate," "Innovate," and "Captivate," as well as how their design anticipates the needs of tomorrow's society. They will need to develop innovative designs that bring fresh imaginative solutions. At the same time, their ideas and designs should be captivating and engaging to the audience and more importantly, of the esteemed judging panel.

The six finalists will be announced in early 2019. The judges and the mentors for the award will be disclosed in the fall 2018. Past LDA judges and mentors include such luminaries such as Sir David Adjaye, Snarkitecture, and Formafantasma.

The judges will select the six best ideas to be developed into functional prototypes with a production budget up to 3 million JPY (over $25K USD) each and with the support of world renowned mentors. The prototypes will be displayed at the prestigious Milan Design Week 2019*where they will compete for the Grand Prix prize.

To prepare the finalists for Milan, Lexus will also provide a once-in-a-lifetime mentorship that gives each finalist an exclusive opportunity to receive direct hands-on guidance from acclaimed professionals who share their priceless knowledge and experience for creating the prototype and beyond.

The Nutcracker and the Four Realms—New Trailer Debuts

A new trailer debuted this morning for Disney’s 2018 holiday feature film The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, which opens in U.S. theaters on November 2, 2018.



All Clara (Mackenzie Foy) wants is a key—a one-of-a-kind key that will unlock a box that holds a priceless gift. A golden thread, presented to her at godfather Drosselmeyer’s (Morgan Freeman) annual holiday party, leads her to the coveted key—which promptly disappears into a strange and mysterious parallel world. 


It’s there that Clara encounters a soldier named Phillip (Jayden Fowora-Knight), a gang of mice and the regents who preside over three Realms: Land of Snowflakes, Land of Flowers and Land of Sweets. Clara and Phillip must brave the ominous Fourth Realm, home to the tyrant Mother Ginger (Helen Mirren), to retrieve Clara’s key and hopefully return harmony to the unstable world. 

Starring Keira Knightley as the Sugar Plum Fairy, Disney’s new holiday feature film The Nutcracker and the Four Realms is directed by Lasse Hallström and Joe Johnston, and inspired by E.T.A. Hoffmann’s classic tale.

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment today announced “Scribblenauts Mega Pack,” a new two-game collection featuring full versions of “Scribblenauts Unlimited” and “Scribblenauts Unmasked: A DC Comics Adventure” along with bonus content for both games. It will be available September 18 for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 4 Pro, Xbox One and Xbox One X with a MSRP of $39.99.

“Scribblenauts Unlimited” fosters unlimited creativity, exploration and social elements that create a fun experience for fans of all ages. Mercedes Benz do Brasil exports 500 buses to Nigeria

Stuttgart / São Bernardo do Campo – Mercedes-Benz do Brasil announces the largest export order in the last ten years: 500 buses for Nigeria. The first 200 buses will be exported at the end of August and will be operated on the streets in Lagos, Nigeria's largest city. All buses for urban passenger transport will be delivered to the Coscharis Group by the end of the year.

Roberto Leoncini, Vice President Sales & Marketing at MB do Brasil, is very pleased about the large order to the most populous country in Africa and the export strength of the Brazilian Daimler subsidiary. The company exports buses and trucks to around 50 countries on different continents, including markets in Africa and the Middle East.
