After claiming their
first continental title in France two years ago, Portugal will travel
to Russia this summer as kings of Europe — and they’ll do it
wearing a collection befitting their new regal status.
The home kit delivers a
rich, classically Portuguese aesthetic topped off with celebratory
splashes of gold that symbolize their landmark victory.
“The collection is
inspired by the success of two years ago,” says Pete Hoppins, Nike
Football Apparel Senior Design Director. “That comes through in the
home kit with this concept of modern royalty. From Luis Figo to
Cristiano, Portugal have a number of iconic characters who have led
and united the squad.”
If one player fits the
collection’s theme of modern royalty, it’s the Portuguese
captain, whose record-breaking exploits, big-game pedigree and
leadership qualities command undiluted reverence from his teammates
and countrymen.
“Ronaldo is a
Portuguese hero,” explains Hoppins. “We wanted to tell the story
of the modern king of football leading this new team.”
Ronaldo may remain the
king, but the emergence of players such as André Silva,
João Mario and André Gomes keeps Portugal’s footballing future
bright.
“With the home kit, we
celebrated where we are with Portugal; the away is all about what’s
next,” says Hoppins. “Portugal is a nation of discovery and that
absolutely extends to their passion and attitude toward football.”
The away kit nods to this
relentless hunt for fresh talent through symbols from their naval
history.
The team’s pre-match
jersey continues the powerful themes with a large Portuguese cross,
taken from the national flag, dominating the front. Together, the
kits send a message that this nation is hungry for more success.
The Portugal home kit
will be available March 23 on Nike.com, the away kit will
be available April 26.
